Sky Sunset View
We can almost feel the calm and magic as the sun sets over Norway's Lofoten Islands, turning the villages of Reine and Hamnoya into a breathtaking panorama.
From above, the red rorbuer cabins stand out against the deep blue fjords and dramatic mountain peaks, creating a scene that looks almost like a painting.
Experiencing these villages at sunset combines adventure, photography, and peaceful moments, making it one of the most unforgettable sights we can witness in northern Norway.

Getting There

To reach Reine and Hamnoya, we typically start at Leknes Airport, which connects with flights from other major cities in Norway. From Leknes, we can drive along the European E10 highway for about 1.5–2 hours. Hamnoya is just 1.5 km northeast of Reine, connected by a bridge that replaced the old ferry. The drive itself is a scenic journey, with fjords, mountains, and small villages at every turn.
For public transportation, buses operate along the E10. A one-way ticket from Leknes to Reine costs around $20 per person. Once in Reine or Hamnoya, walking is the easiest way to explore, as the villages are compact and connected by pedestrian paths.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal season to see sunset aerial views is summer, from late June to early August, when Norway enjoys long daylight hours. Sunset can occur around 10:30–11:00 PM, giving us ample time for hiking, photography, and drone flights.
Winter (December–February) is also magical, with snow-covered peaks and Northern Lights, but daylight is only 4–6 hours, and roads may be icy. Checking weather conditions and daylight hours before planning is essential.

Accommodation Options

Staying overnight allows us to enjoy both sunset and sunrise. In Hamnoya, rorbuer cabins are the most popular choice, priced from $120–$200 per night. These cabins provide cozy interiors with basic amenities and often feature beautiful fjord views. Reine offers guesthouses and small hotels with rates around $100–$180 per night.
Booking in advance, especially during summer, is highly recommended, as these villages attract tourists from around the world.

Dining Options

Local restaurants serve freshly caught seafood such as cod, Arctic char, and shrimp. Average meal prices range from $25–$50. Small cafes and bakeries offer sandwiches, pastries, and coffee for $10–$15. For longer hikes or aerial tours, packing water and snacks is recommended, as shops in the villages are limited. Dining in the evening while watching the sun dip below the mountains creates a perfect, relaxing experience.

Activities and Aerial Views

To fully enjoy aerial views, we can use drones (following Norwegian regulations) or join guided sightseeing flights. Drones provide flexibility, but we must avoid private property and wildlife areas. Guided flights typically cost $150–$200 per person for 30–40 minutes.
For hiking, the Reinebringen trail is a favorite. It is moderately steep, offering panoramic views of Reine, Hamnoya, and the surrounding fjords. The round trip takes about 2–3 hours. Hiking shoes, layered clothing, and water are essential. The golden hour, roughly one hour before sunset, provides ideal lighting for photography, whether using drones or cameras from elevated viewpoints.

Practical Tips

- Dress in layers; evenings near fjords can be chilly even in summer.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes for trails and uneven village paths.
- Bring a camera or drone, and always follow local rules.
- Start exploring at least 1–2 hours before sunset for the best views.
- Use local transport apps to check bus schedules and fares.
- Respect the environment and local communities, keeping villages clean.
- Check weather and daylight conditions daily, as Arctic weather can change rapidly.
